Direct Primary Care and You

What is Direct Primary Care?

Direct primary care is an exciting and rapidly growing model to provide primary care without the costly interference of private health insurance companies. Instead, our patients pay us directly through a convenient and affordable flat monthly fee.

This allows me to keep this practice small and provide you with highly accessible, personalized, and preventive care when you need it. It’s like having your doctor available at the touch of a button.  My focus on ensuring a strong and satisfying doctor-patient relationship is the key to helping you stay healthy.

In fact, it’s the way I’ve always wanted and expected to practice medicine!

How does our practice differ from the typical traditional practice?

You will see and feel the difference immediately when you visit me at Dr. Lindy MD. Our reception area is relaxing and comfortable, and you will experience very short if any wait times to see me. Office visits will never feel rushed so I can take the time to address your health concerns and questions. Because my practice is limited to just a few hundred, not thousands, of patients, I really get to know my patients so I can take a more proactive role in your health and wellness – and be there when you need me.

My goal is to provide you and your family with an experience that will not just meet, but exceed, your expectations for a doctor’s office.

What does membership include?

Your membership covers all the primary care services I offer in my office.

In addition, I can provide a large amount of care and care coordination by phone, email and text, including virtual visits when appropriate.

I am available to discuss urgent concerns nights and weekends when needed. I have worked hard to create a practice where you can reach me when you need me, without having to jump through multiple hoops!

You will enjoy greater convenience and peace of mind, and may also find a reduced need for visits to specialists and the emergency department.

Who does this membership plan work best for?

People of all ages benefit from the value-added services I offer at Dr. Lindy MD.

It works especially well for:

  • Patients desiring easy and direct communication with their doctor
  • Patients who want a doctor to address the root cause of illness, not just treat the symptoms
  • Those who want to participate in improving their health and staying well
  • Those with high insurance premiums, high-deductible health plans or no insurance
  • Self-insured businesses seeking to provide their employees with affordable health care and improved wellbeing, while simultaneously reducing everyone’s healthcare spending

Appointments, Referrals and Care

Do you see me if I’m in the emergency room or hospital?

Emergency room visits and hospital admissions for serious medical problems are stressful and often confusing for patients and their families.

If you need me, I will be available. Either you or your hospitalist providing your care can contact me to make sure they have the most accurate and up-to-date information they need to treat you. I will be delighted to communicate with the hospitalist, review your plan of care, answer questions, and make recommendations when needed. As your health care advocate, I will communicate directly with you and your loved ones, and help you navigate the health care system. While hospital visits are not included in the membership plan, I can make special arrangements to visit you if needed.

Following your hospitalization, we will create an after-care treatment plan and be sure you and your family have all the information you need to continue in your recovery.

Do you make home visits or nursing home visits?

Yes, I do. I appreciate that it is often difficult, and even expensive to get to the doctor’s office. I will see patients in their home or nursing facility, rehab facility or ALF in medically appropriate situations and on a case-by-case basis. My practice has a “Home Visit Plan” for those who are homebound or in a nursing home.

What if I need specialty care?

As your primary care physician, my comprehensive training allows me to handle most of your healthcare needs. However, in the event you do need to see a specialist I will help you find the right doctor and coordinate your care. Our referral process may include direct physician-to-physician consultation prior to your appointment so that your specialist knows exactly how s/he can help us improve your health.

After your specialist visit, I will follow up to discuss any questions or concerns you have, and arrange additional testing if needed.

What if I need Urgent care?

If you are sick and need to see me, usually I can see you the same or next day.

If your illness cannot wait and it is an emergency, call 911.

For urgent problems that are not emergencies, call me. You can contact me when you need to. I can discuss your concern by phone, and if the phone consultation is not enough, I can meet you at the office. In many cases, I can diagnose and treat your need without a visit to the ER or Urgent Care.

What if I need medical attention while I’m away from home?

Traveling?  Need a virtual office visit? No problem!
You can speak with me wherever you are and I will help with any medical conditions that can be done by “virtual visit.” If you have a condition that requires in-person evaluation and treatment, I will direct you to appropriate nearby care, and coordinate follow-up when you return home.

What if I just have a health concern or want to discuss lab results?

If you’ve recently been in the office and you desire to go over your lab results by phone, or if you have a health concern for which a physical examination isn’t medically indicated, this can be accomplished with a phone visit or a virtual visit. Of course, it’s good practice (and medically indicated) to let your doctor see you in person in certain circumstances, so I do ask that members come to the office for visits whenever possible, and require office visits when medically appropriate.

What about coverage when Dr. Lindy is away?

As a member of Dr. Lindy MD, you are never alone. Even when out of town, I will still be available by phone for your urgent needs. You will be notified by email prior to any vacations. If I am not available, I will always have another trusted physician available to assist you for any urgent matters or to be seen in the office.

How Insurance Works in the Practice

Do you bill insurance plans?

I have chosen not to. My practice is designed to be unencumbered by the constraints and limited reimbursement from insurance plans so that I may better serve and care for my patients. You will NOT be charged for office visits or co-pays.  You only pay the membership fee.

This DPC model results in significant savings: money, paperwork and time. The membership fee allows me to keep overhead low, my practice small, and work directly for my patients, not the insurance company!

Can you see me if I have Medicare?

Absolutely.  My private medicine model is particularly well designed to handle the more complex medical issues and medication management often associated with older patients.  I can spend the time necessary to manage chronic disease and optimize your health and wellness.

Note: As I have opted-out of Medicare, it means neither our practice nor the member can submit a claim to Medicare for reimbursement for primary care. However, Medicare payment will continue according to your specific plan, without change for medications, blood work, imaging tests, specialty referrals and care, or hospitalization.

Do I still need to have health insurance?

Yes, you do. My medical practice is NOT a health insurance program. It is very important to maintain insurance (and/or Medicare) to cover outside testing and specialists, as well as expensive, unusual and unpredictable events such as surgery, emergency care and hospitalization – but not for everyday preventive primary care! By providing you with extraordinary and connected primary care, your plan utilization can often be reduced.

The current insurance-based disease management healthcare system actually makes primary care MORE expensive, difficult and less effective too. My practice does the opposite.

By charging a set fee, I can spend more time with you and focus on your individual health needs to maintain and improve your health. I want you to see me as often as you need to, because my goal is healthy and happy members!

What if I have an HMO insurance plan?

If you have an HMO plan and are interested in joining Dr. Lindy MD, please call us at 970-493-1027 to discuss how membership may work for you.

How does not billing insurance provide better care experience?

By NOT billing insurance, I step outside the narrow insurance definitions of medical necessity, and other insurance mandates and limitations concerning optimum health issues, healthy aging, and complementary and integrative therapies for managing chronic conditions. I am able to spend sufficient time needed to review your lab results and diagnostic studies, and listen to your experience related to treatments and encounters in our complicated healthcare system, and co-create a customized treatment plan.

In your health care encounter with me, gone is the wasted time and stress related to usual front office check-in, long waits in the reception area and exam room, the doctor’s mandated insurance work in the exam room, and the pre- and post-office visit insurance charting.

The membership cost is low because I don’t have to pass along the costs for insurance claims processing, billing and collections, and related administrative staffing costs.

How To Join

How much is the membership fee?

Please visit our pricing* section for details. We have discounts for families, and there are no long-term contracts required. You can pay annually or monthly.

The best part is, there are never any co-pays or deductibles to meet.

Can joining Dr. Lindy MD actually save me money?

It is expected that many patients will save money at my practice because I can better manage the risks of the vast majority of your health issues and concerns – because of my smaller practice and more connected primary care model.

This direct primary care contract, in the form of a membership, is like a health club membership, only better.

A year’s worth of highly convenient access to me can cost less than just a 4-hour ER visit. In fact, many people find they can lower the cost of their total medical care by combining a high deductible health plan with a membership practice, thus making joining this practice quite affordable. My type of practice is also a good fit for those who have no insurance.

Studies show that direct primary care can lead to:
  • Less unnecessary medications
  • Fewer specialty referrals
  • Fewer emergency and hospital visits
  • Savings on labs and imaging
  • Less need for expensive test ordering

You won’t have any hidden costs or bills that come to you after-the-fact from the office or insurance company. And by switching to a higher deductible, lower premium plan, I can actually help many of my patients save money.

I also have negotiated discounts with local labs and radiology providers for my patients who choose to pay cash for these services.

There are also affordable Medical cost sharing programs for individuals, families and employers. Check out Liberty Direct.org which may pay a generous part of Dr. Lindy’s membership fee.

Will I still benefit from membership even if I don’t expect to need frequent medical attention?

Absolutely. My focus at Dr. Lindy MD is on preventive care, lifestyle modifications, screenings and risk assessments, as well as acute care and chronic disease management. I want to identify and prevent disease before it starts, concentrating our efforts on long-term health and wellness. I listen carefully to you to understand how your life, work and family may be affecting your health. Together we create a personalized plan to achieve and maintain your optimal health and goals. Advanced diagnostic tests can help us identify risk factors and health issues before they cause disease, saving you money, time, suffering and higher costs in the long run. Unlike the traditional practice environment, I have the time to deliver this type of comprehensive and detailed care.

How is membership different than “a la carte” or “fee for service”?

Your ease of access to quality medical care over a year in this therapeutic partnership is a better investment than two Urgent Care visits in a year, or 4 hours of cash pay consultation services.

Is there a limit to how many patients can join Dr. Lindy MD?

Yes. One of the most important aspects of private medicine is limiting the practice size to be able to devote more time and energy to each patient. Therefore, once we have reached our ideal practice size, we will establish a waiting list.

What if I want to end my membership?

You are welcome to cancel your membership at any time as long as you give us 30 day’s notice. We will refund memberships paid for the full year at a prorated rate as long as the Annual Wellness Exam has yet to be delivered.

HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER?

Please see our Join Us page for more information, and to sign up for one of our upcoming information sessions.

Please remember that space is limited and I will accept members on a first-come, first-served basis. Once I fill all available slots, I will add your name to our waiting list, so I encourage you to act quickly.

I am ready to join.

I’m still not sure. Can we sit down and talk?

Absolutely!  Call, email or visit our Contact Us page. We are happy to also arrange a complimentary non-medical consultation with Dr. Lindy prior to joining our practice.
